Federal Government 30% Rebate

What is the 30% Rebate?

Did you know that the Australian Federal Government gives you a rebate on your Health Insurance? In January of 1999 the Federal Government introduced the 30% rebate on Private Health Insurance. Basically what this means for you is that for every dollar you pay into Health Insurance premiums the Federal Government will give you back 30 cents.

Further to the 30% rebate, in April 2005 in accordance to changes to the Private Health Insurance Incentives Act 1988, the Government increased this rebate for people aged over 65. The Federal Government Rebate increased to 35% for people aged over 65, and to 40% for people aged over 70.

Claiming the 30 - 40% Rebate

There are three ways of claiming the Federal Government Rebate.

1 - Pay reduced Health Insurance premiums by claiming the rebate directly from your Health Fund.

2 - Claim the rebate at the end of the financial year on your tax return.

3 - Direct payment from the Government through your local Medicare office.

Who's Eligible to claim the 30 - 40% Rebate

If you hold a Current Australian Medicare Card and have Private Health Insurance, you are eligible to claim the 30-40% Rebate.
